Quick answer

For AY 2026–27, first identify every source of income and then choose the return form. Do not select ITR-1 only because you receive a salary. Your residential status, total income, capital gains, house properties, business or professional income, directorships, unlisted shares, and foreign assets can change the correct form.

The Income Tax Department has enabled online filing and utilities for AY 2026–27 forms. Always use incometax.gov.in and read the eligibility shown for the form before submission.

ITR-1, ITR-2 or ITR-4?

| Form | Often relevant when | Stop and check another form when | | --- | --- | --- | | ITR-1 (Sahaj) | Eligible resident individual, total income up to ₹50 lakh, and only income types permitted by the form | You have disqualifying capital gains, foreign assets, non-resident status, business income, directorship or another excluded condition | | ITR-2 | Individual or HUF with no business/professional income, but income may include capital gains, multiple house properties or other sources | You have profits or gains from business or profession | | ITR-4 (Sugam) | Eligible resident individual, HUF or firm using specified presumptive-tax provisions and meeting the form conditions | You fall outside presumptive taxation or meet an exclusion listed in the official form guidance |

This is a starting map, not a form recommendation for your individual case. Use the official ITR-1 guide, ITR-2 guide, or ITR-4 guide to confirm current eligibility.

Documents and information to collect

  • PAN, Aadhaar and the mobile number used for portal access
  • Form 16 and any Form 16A certificates
  • Annual Information Statement (AIS), Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS), and Form 26AS
  • Bank and post-office interest certificates
  • Home-loan interest certificate and property details, if relevant
  • Capital-gain statements for shares, mutual funds, property, or other assets
  • Deduction evidence and donation receipts, where legally claimable
  • Foreign income or asset details, where applicable
  • Previous return, loss records, and tax-payment challans

AIS can contain duplicate, incomplete, or unfamiliar entries. Review it, compare it with your own records, and use the portal feedback process where appropriate.

Step-by-step filing flow

  1. Sign in only at the official Income Tax e-Filing portal.
  2. Confirm your profile, bank account, contact details, and assessment year.
  3. List all income sources before selecting the form.
  4. Compare pre-filled data with your actual documents.
  5. Review the tax regime, deductions, losses, and taxes already paid.
  6. Pay any valid self-assessment tax through the official payment flow.
  7. Preview the complete return before submitting it.
  8. Submit and complete e-verification within the period displayed by the portal.
  9. Save the acknowledgement, filed return, challans, and computation.

Common mistakes that delay refunds or create notices

  • Choosing the wrong assessment year or ITR form
  • Omitting savings-account, fixed-deposit, freelance, rent, or capital-gain income
  • Claiming a deduction without checking eligibility under the selected tax regime
  • Entering challan or bank details incorrectly
  • Ignoring AIS, TIS, or Form 26AS differences
  • Filing but not completing verification
  • Treating a refund estimate as guaranteed before processing

If you already filed with a mistake

Do not file a second original return. Check whether a revised return, updated return, rectification, or response to a notice is the correct route. These options solve different problems and have different time limits and financial consequences.

For AY 2026–27, the official department guidance states that revised-return timing has changed. Confirm the live rule and fee shown on the Income Tax Department's ITR FAQ before acting.

When professional help is useful

Consider qualified tax assistance if you have business or professional income, capital gains, foreign assets or income, crypto transactions, multiple properties, carried-forward losses, a tax notice, an estate matter, or uncertainty about the correct form. Ask for the exact scope, provider, fee, and deliverables in writing before sharing documents or paying.

FAQ

Which ITR form should a salaried person use for AY 2026–27?

ITR-1 may fit an eligible resident individual with total income up to ₹50 lakh and only the permitted income types. Capital gains, foreign assets, non-resident status, business income, directorships, or other circumstances can require another form. Confirm with the official form eligibility rules before filing.

Is filing the ITR enough?

No. A return normally must also be e-verified within the period shown by the Income Tax portal, unless the permitted physical verification process is used.

What should I compare before filing?

Compare Form 16, AIS, TIS, Form 26AS, bank interest, investment and deduction records, and any capital-gain statements. Resolve unexplained differences instead of copying one document blindly.

Can a filed return be corrected?

A revised return may be possible within the applicable time limit. AY 2026–27 rules and any additional fee depend on when the revision is filed, so check the current official portal guidance.
